Printing on sublimation paper for mugs involves transferring your design onto a specially coated mug using heat and pressure. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Materials Needed

Sublimation printer & ink
Sublimation paper
Polyester-coated sublimation mugs (must have a polymer coating)
Heat press with a mug press attachment (or a dedicated mug press)
Heat-resistant tape (to secure the design)
Teflon tape or shrink wrap (to hold the paper tightly against the mug)
Oven mitts (for handling hot mugs)
Design software (Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva, etc.)

Step-by-Step Process

1. Design Your Artwork
Create or upload your design using graphic software.
Mirror the image (flip horizontally) before printing-this ensures it transfers correctly.
Adjust the size to fit the mug's printable area (usually about 8"–9" tall x 3"–4" wide for standard mugs).

2. Print on Sublimation Paper
Load sublimation paper into your printer (check the correct printable side).
Use sublimation ink only (regular ink won't transfer).
Print in high-quality mode for best results.

3. Prepare the Mug
Use only polyester-coated sublimation mugs (regular ceramic mugs won't work).
Wipe the mug with alcohol or a lint-free cloth to remove dust/oils.

4. Secure the Design on the Mug
Wrap the printed sublimation paper ink-side down around the mug.
Secure tightly with heat-resistant tape (or use shrink wrap + Teflon tape for even pressure).

5. Heat Press the Mug
Preheat the mug press to 190–210°C).
Press for 180–200 seconds (3–3.5 minutes).
If using an oven or convection heat press, follow the same time/temp but monitor closely.

6. Cool & Remove the Paper
Let the mug cool for 1–2 minutes before peeling off the paper.
The design will now be permanently fused to the mug.

Tips for Best Results

* Use high-quality sublimation mugs (cheap coatings may crack or fade).
* Avoid touching the printed area before pressing (oils can interfere).
* For multi-color designs, increase the pressure slightly to prevent gaps.
* Wash by hand (not dishwasher) to preserve the print longer.
